Thai Pongal celebration was held at CORD office Ulavanoor with the participation of our sponsored children on 16^th January 2023.

They enjoyed the day’s event which concluded with a cultural show and was given Sakkarai Pongal.

Cash given to purchase seeds and planting materials

CORD gave cash for 12 women to commence their agricultural activities. Each of them received Rs. 20,000.00nto meet the initial expenses of land preparation, buying seeds and planting materials. They have done well to produce excellent results.

Awareness program on new Agricultural techniques to SHG wone Farmers

CORD organized an awareness program for women farmers at their Ulavanoor office recently to improve their knowledge on new innovative technologies in agriculture. Mr. Vimalenthan from Government Department of Agriculture conducted the session for CORD SHG women. Starting by explaining the benefits of compost, methods of preparation, and method of compost application, he moved on to explain about the of soilless farming and growing inside green houses and their benefits. He also explained about drip irrigation and its benefits. The participants were extremely happy with the new knowledge they gained and share their feedback with him.

CORD Sri Lanka conducts a Career Guidance programme for students

The students often focus their education on passing the AL and entering the university to pursue their higher studies in their chosen fields. However, only few students enter the university and majority find it difficult to choose a suitable career path due to lack of knowledge about the alternate avenues available.

CORD conducted a Career Carrier Guidance Program for 75 school children in on 9th of October 2022. All the participants were given a notebook and a pen to record the useful points. The sessions started with the lighting of the oil lamp by Mrs. Gowrie Mahenthiran, Executive Director, CORD Sri Lanka and Mr M. Umakanth, Senior Lecturer, University of Jaffna, who conducted the sessions. Students demonstrated excellent self-discipline and observation while following the program with great interest. Students were also provided with necessary stationery, refreshments, and lunch by CORD.

From morning till evening, the kids were primarily calm and focused. The students were also taught specific themes about time management and positive thinking before and after breaks, such as pursuing higher education. Future programs may cover topics such as leadership and communication.

The consultant explained the importance of choosing a right career early without wasting their valuable time. Mr Sivarupan explained the AL qualified students how to fill the university entrance application form to apply for their prefeed courses. The day’s programme was over by 4 PM. The participants were extremely happy with the knowledge and thanked CORD for organizing the programme.

Navratri Pooja

Navaratri Pooja was held at our Ulavanoor office on 30th September 2022.The Pooja started by singing the Navaratri Bajan by the students and Mrs.Chandra gave a speech on the significant of the Navaratri festival.

50 sponsor children and 25 parents participated in the Pooja. They were offered with 5 kinds of Prasadam.

CHILDREN’S Day Celebration

Children’s day event was organized and celebrated in an excellent way at Ulavanoor CORD office on 30th September 2022.

The event started under the leadership of our sponsor child Yalavan who was sponsored for 7 years and sat for the advance level exam in 2021 and successfully qualified with 3C’s to enter university to do Physical science.

The first event was a poetry read by another sponsored child Sanoyan.

The next topic was about the child rights by another sponsored child Marudappan.

50 Sponsor kids participated in this event. The children enjoyed with dance performance and games & ice cream.

We gave the girls and boys 2 sets of inner garments, shirts, shorts and dress materials.

Computer/English class

Computer & English classes were started at Ulavanoor CORD office on 5th October 2022 which was Vijayadashami day by Nitharshana & Kristene.

14 students enthusiastically participated in these classes. These classes would be 1 hour for each class for 3 days a week following with a snack such as Saththuma or Kadala or green gram.

	S. Pushpamary She is a war widow with two school going children. She has set up small backyard poultry with the loan money. She has earned around Rs.15000 so far.
	T. Sumathi She is a war-widow with three school going children. She invested the loan money to purchase a cow. She gets around 5 liters of milk per day and earns Rs.9000 per month by selling milk. She has also got a small backyard poultry.
	V.Rajitha She as two school going children and a disabled husband to take care of. She gets about 3 liters of milk per day and earns around Rs. 5400 per month by selling milk. Additionally she maintains a banana cultivation and a home garden to grow vegetable for home consumption.
	K. Arulthevi She has a disabled husband who had lost his leg. With the loan money she has purchased a cow. She earns an average income of Rs. 4800 per month by selling milk. She also maintains a home garden to grow vegetables required for the family.
	T. Sasikala She is a war widow with four school going children. She managed to set up a small backyard poultry with the loan money she received. She gets around 12 eggs per day and earns an income of Rs. 5700 a month. She also maintains a home garden to grow vegetables required for the family.
	S Vinothini She is a war widow with a school going child. She has purchased 30 hens from the loan money. She earns Rs. 3000 per month by selling eggs. Additionally she is involved in home gardening.
	T. Jeyarathy She is a war widow with two school going children. She bought a cow with the money and she earns Rs. 10,500 per month by selling milk. She is also having a home garden.
	C. Manonmani She is a war widow with five children. She has bought a cow with this money and by selling milk she earns Rs. 6000 a month.
	S. Vijayagowrie Husband is a heart patient who cannot do heavy work. She has three school going children. She started cultivating betel and vegetables with the money she received. Now she earns Rs.15,000 per month.
	N . Annalukshamy She is a war widow with four school going children. With the money she received, she purchased a sewing machine and a goat. By sewing, she earns around Rs.7000 per month. She also maintains a home garden to grow vegetable for home consumption.

Free School Uniforms to Children

CORD Sri Lanka on 8th July 2022 donated school uniforms to 56 children to facilitate their continued attendance to school. As such 34 girls and 16 boys received uniforms from CORD.
